At the July 22, 2015 Regular Council Meeting, the District of Sechelt approved the disbursement of grants from the SCCF Legacy Fund. Three grants were approved in total.
$65,000 was approved for the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society to help fund expansion of the kitchen in the Community Services building. The new commercial kitchen will be used in programs to help provide food and nutritional education to vulnerable members of our community. It will be easily accessible from the Food Bank and the Community Garden plots creating a community food hub.
The West Sechelt Elementary Playground Enhancement Committee will receive $30,000 for continued improvements to the playground at the elementary school which is not only available to the students but to any and all children in our community. This phase of improvements will see the installation of a natural playground and a large net climber.
Finally, $6,400 was approved as an addition to last year’s grant to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society. This grant will be used to build a wheelchair access ramp to the bridge in the Native Plant Garden which was constructed using last year’s grant.
The SCCF Legacy Fund has now provided eight grants to community projects since its inception early last year. Applications for the SCCF Legacy Fund can be made at any time by community groups, public sector agencies and non-profit organizations.
